EL ALISO / THE SAINSEVAIN WINERY, by Harris Newmark

"Jean Louis Vignes came to Los Angeles in 1829, and set out the Aliso Vineyard of one hundred and four acres which derived its name, as did the street, from a previous and incorrect application of the Castilian aliso, meaning alder, to the sycamore tree, a big specimen of which stood on the place. This tree, possibly a couple of hundred years old, long shaded Vignes' wine-cellars, and was finally cut down a few years ago to make room for the Philadelphia Brew House."

NEWSPAPER ADVERTISEMENTS FOR THE MAIER & ZOBELEIN BREWERY, 1900’S

"In the year 1881, at a time when it was thought that no good lager beer could be made in California, Maier & Zobelein secured possession of the famous brewery, which now bears their name, and, after years of diligent toil, succeeded in placing upon the market a quality of beer that is well known from the Pacific to the Atlantic seaboard... The brewery has recently been turned into a corporation, so as to give the employees and friends an opportunity to take a more direct interest in its welfare, and extend its business still further."
